hakusei (2011)  162 x 130cm  acrylic on canvas

Two years ago, when I recommended Jun Fukukawa for a competition, I wrote a short sentence in the catalog as a reason for recommending him.
At that time, I touched his painting of a deer and wrote that "tranquility" resides from the neck up, and "savagery" dwells in the torso. The artist in question wrote about his own work, "If you draw a concrete motif and reach an abstraction...".
The words of the two men seem to point in the same direction for some time, but in the midst of the current boom in Ohanashi paintings, which are filled with icons and characters, how do his paintings interact with people? It will be visible.
After all, he also draws Disney characters. He paints Snow White, Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh. As for him, if you ask me if he is a jerk, he draws a picture that "doesn't look like a jerk". He neither confirms nor denies icons or characters.
He does not set the meaning of the figure to the level of accepting it or not. Stepping on a fumi-e and not stepping on it tell a completely different story, but he tells neither story. So why draw icons and characters? Whether he steps on the fumi-e or not, he does not land on any of them and tries to step on another place that does not crystallize. For that reason, he dares to step on a "tiger's tail" instead of a fumi-e. It can be seen as a quiet but scathing critique of our current situation, our feelings, the sensory world, and our images. When I look at his paintings, my eyes are staring at the familiar image, unable to trace its shape, and wandering a few centimeters above the screen.
The deer seems to be stuffed. After death, it is a memento that has been forcibly preserved by human hands. Jun Fukukawa captures this in a painting. Snow White is also a mere corpse. It has the same structure as a stuffed deer. Maybe because of that, it's not very comfortable, and yet it looks like it's empty. Whether it's sinking sediment or penetrating through it... I feel like I'm touching something unknown. As soon as some form that is covered with meaning and reason is drawn in a “picture,” everything is ruined, and thanks to that, we are freed from all yokes and shine brightly. My eyes are not yet accustomed to something. So I think I'll try to get my eyes used to it little by little. Our drawing level is still Lesson 1 in English. But I think Jun Fukukawa is around the last page. After staying in Europe (Paris) for more than seven years, he returned to Japan. Since then, I would like you to take a close look at the "pictures" of this painter, who has continued to draw until today, reluctant to follow the trend.
